At this point I’d like to apologise for what happened next. Or rather what didn’t happen next. The band played another two songs, including an exclusive first performance of their new track, Game of Guarding Hearts, I can personally testify that it was fantastic to listen to. I can’t, however, play it for you as in an act of gross incompetence the likes of which are seldom heard on radio, we got it wrong and the lead vocals dropped out. The guys took it on the chin, even chuckling that it was time for an instrumental anyway – I cannot wait to get them back in!

The head of the UK Radio Player was interviewed recently on the Radio Academy podcast, he had high praise for Soundart Radio, describing it as ‘redefining radio’. In particular Michael was impressed by our breakfast show In Bed with Sarah and John.

Michael Hill, managing director UK Radio Player, talks to Matt Deegan with Clive Dickens, Chief Operating Officer, Absolute Radio

Topic: Redefining radio (following from Absolute Radio’s event of the same name in Parliament in the previous week)

Matt Deegan:

Is there reallly a need to redefine radio. 90% of the country listen 23 hours a week, surely we’re doing all right?

Michael Hill:

We are doing all right. But, whist we are doing all right we need to incrimentally redefine radio so it’s not a panic course correction that’s needed here, it’s evolution from a position of strength, which is a brilliant way to do it and redefining radio could happen very incrementally. It doesn’t have to involve product launches and press releases and events at parliament, there are lots of people around the radio industry who are very quietly, and very gently, redefining radio and we ought to try help some of them as well.

Matt Deegan:

It’s interesting. I follow the radio player twitter feed and so when new stations go on, up pops the message about them. And there’s lots of stations you kind of have in the back of your mind and you know exist and you know instantly, and they are there. You must have seen and worked with a lot of the smaller operators: are there many supprises as you’ve been doing that process?

Michael Hill:

Yes, one of my particular favourites at the moment is an outfit called Soundart Radio from Totnes in Devon who are a community station um it seem to be a schedule packed full of local artists, basically, and they are redefining radio no doubt about it. If you listen to them their breakfast show’s called In Bed with Sarah and John and it doesn’t sound like any radio you ever heard before. they’ve got really creative program titles as well one over Christmas was called jingle hell and their summer event for raising money was called the Fate Worst than Death, and there weather report in breakfast this morning was done from a very artistic perspective, I think, the woman just looked out of the window and said,

‘There’s a blanket over Dartington and Totnes this morning and there’s no definition in the sky’.

Matt:

Wow! Maybe you could mention that to Christian (O’Connel – Absolute Breakfast) er Clive, add that in to the bulletin?!

Clive Dickens:

Ah, goodness, fantastic, it’s great to hear that kind of community radio coming to the radio player…

In Bed with Sarah and John, weekdays from 8am, Soundart Radio

You may already be aware of this commentary and interview between Peter Reynolds, leader of CLEAR, and myself. CLEAR (cannabis law reform party) are working to increase the supply of legal cannabis to MS sufferers, who currently have to act like covert criminals and buy it on the street. CLEAR suggests a taxed and regulated cannabis supply chain which will create some kind of utopia where MS sufferers aren’t in pain and adolescents never chuck a whitey.

Legalising, they claim, will protect both these demographics and generate net gain in the order of £6 billion a year for the UK economy.

CLEAR members must have experienced temporary incontinence when they saw this headline on the net a few days ago:

Sweden to legalise cannabis favouring a taxed and regulated system

The article also contains a quote from Swedens ‘Director of Health and Social Services’

We don’t want to make the same mistakes which the USA has done, we do not want to be prohibitionists because the war on drugs has been lost long ago. It is better to prevent marginalization of young people than jail them for soft drugs usage which are comparatively harmless. If we allow the sale of alcohol, there is no reason to ban the soft drugs no longer

Sadly the article is a hoax and Sweden persists with it’s current policy of zero tolerance of illegal drugs, and a guarantees that all cases are prosecuted. Sweden has a drug related death rate at twice that of the Netherlands.

Fear not, Prof Nutt has vowed to speak the truth about drugs

Professor David Nutt got into trouble for applying scientific principals whilst advising the British government about drug policy back in 2008. Nutt and his team developed a rating system to calculate how harmful a particular drug is. If that sounds like useful knowledge that’s only because it is. If one were in government one could direct our drugs policy to reflect potential harm, so the most harmful drug would be most illegal and so on…

The trouble with the rating system is that it exposed some challenging little anomalies, like heroin being less dangerous than it’s prescription replacement, methodone, for example. No one really cares about smack addicts though and it was the idea that MDMA/exctacy was really quite safe that alarmed more Daily Mail readers. The study also marked cannabis out as slightly less dangerous than masterbating*.

*The study makes no note about masturbating – I just work from home.

Well Prof Nutt vowed to keep speaking the truth about drugs and to that end he has launched the Independent Scientific Committee on Drugs, where he now counts among his team some of those scientists who resigned over his sacking. The team have published a new chart of drug harms, and the stuff to back it up, in the Lancet. I’ve only got the chart here though, because it’s pretty.

<img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2118" title="drug-harm-comparison-david-nutt-et-al" src="http://www.totnesmonster.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/drug-harm-comparison-david-nutt-et-al-258x300.gif" alt="drug harm chart showing alcohol and other drugs rated in terms of harmfullness.

There is snow on the ground around the Monsters cave so this is the time of year we like to pull out our Top 10 Live Sessions, partly because it’s awesome to look back and see, especially this year, just how much talent passes through the doors here at Soundart Radio. But mainly because it fills the Christmas gap in web hits. So, thank you. You’re cheering me up just by being here. Let me now spread some happiness in your direction…

Best of Devon 2011 Live Radio Sessions.

There’s 10 of them (in no particular order)

Hugh Nankivelle – Kidney Card

This man could earn a fortune in the corporate sector. He once offered to be composer-in-residence at Paignton Zoo, they declined and missed out on Baby Black Rhino. More Hugh (including Basic Rock Song) here

Quails – The Fever and Argentina

The Quails are, alas, no more. This session was the last time the guys were seen together, live. Well, second-to-last time anyway. And the ‘last time’ was maybe a week later on BBC Radio Devon on Shep and Jo’s show. But only two out of the four of them turned up. The first sign of a split perhaps?. More Quails live session here

Bare bones Trio – Clementine

Click here to view the embedded video.

Sure, this one sounds good but have you seen what they do with their fingers?! More Bare bones here

If you are one of those weird people who likes to watch… You may like to be distracted from this ‘Best Of’ list by looking at live sessions on our youtube channel – You can pretened the band are in a Ford Mondeo, if you like, and that you’re looking in from outside. Weirdo.

Beacons – Too Busy

Click here to view the embedded video.

These guys played a fantastic set at the South West Music Awards. At the beginning they gave the Angry Man in the audience a bit of a ribbing. To put this in perspective Angry Man had already heckled three performances. Twice on the stage itself whilst clasping the microphone. Mind you, he does have years of experience. Angry Man was in 80′s band Wang Chung, where, in the early days he would wrap or hide himself in anything, even in a microphone lead. In the decades between now and then he has overcome his shyness and can be seen in 2012 at Skeggness and Minehead Butlins and many holiday camps besides, I dare say it’s his bread and butter. More Beacons here (The Beacons will be providing their own butter).

Dan Crisp – Find Yourself

More from Dan here

Hugh and Graham – I Can Tell

I’ve cried to this song a number of times, it’s about death by the way. More from Hugh and Graham, including the Basic Rock Song, here

David Harbottle – Fathers Advice*

* I don’t know the name of this track, except to say it’s about the guys’ dad trying to disuade him from doing music as a direction in life. David now teaches music, in fact he teaches my daughter and she finds it uncomfortable when we call him David, teachers are called sir! Now, go to the back of your comfort zone and think about what you’ve done! More from Mr Harbottle then here

Albert Jones – Promise

I once wanted to have hair like Jason Donovan, I bet Albert has never wanted that. Look at that rugged beard. I’m in awe! And he sounds good singing and playing here with his mates, Max Evans and Chris Jones. More of this superb session with Albert, Max and Chris here set for big things – we’ll keep you posted.

The Wishbones – The Good intent

I love it when a bunch of young blokes can do harmonies. Mostly because it sounds ace, but partly because when I was in school this kind of singing would get you beaten up (even SINGING was frowned upon). More Wishbones here

The Rising – Dry

More from The Rising here

Ah, I see there is an order! It’s chronological (ish). 2011 has been an amazing year for Totnes music, thanks for taking an interest and please do consider nominating a track for Disctruction! – Where bad music goes to die. And all the best for 2012 by the way. James, a listener from Bridport, has suggested we do an End of the World special. We’ll see.

To everyone who skipped dinner, climbed a big hill, braved late trains and paid for their own diesel. To you all, thank you. Specifically for the hours and hours of work you put in so we can hear a tiny segment.

Thank you, Chris and Shannon

We love your suggestions for Disctruction – This is the feature where we destroy that one track you cannot stand. A variety of music has so far been brought to our attention.

From Vivaldi who packaged all Four of the Seasons, to the inappropriately timed Club Tropicana by Wham! With its free drinks and swimming pools and George Micheal falling off a lilo, time and time again, with perfect hair. This was in the early 80′s when most people struggled to put coal on the plate…

Club Tropicana – Wham!

And then there’s this stuff the bank plays at you down the phone. It’s easy to spot, it sounds like posh people in a country garden, being recorded with a mobile phone and then shat out of guttering. And, at the end of it all, you get to talk to the bank – what’s not to like?

Vivaldi – Four Seasons

Sincerely, the weirdest music video I’ve ever seen…

Brian Adams – Cloud Number 9

‘Either it had some kind of profound spiritual meaning… Or he just thought sod it let’s get shit loads of milk a floating girl and a massive dog, I reckon the latter, the milk drinking scene was really, really creepy’ – Siobhán

The milk scene is especially disturbing. Sorry about the advert you may have to endure before the milk-porn begins.

It Gets Worse…

Mick Hucknell might love the thought of giving hope to you but I reckon he just sounds a bit, you know, messianic. Matt suggested this track and says it makes him feel as if he’s been touched in a ‘wrong way’. Trust Hucknell when he sings ‘Even if I know we can’t make it’ – He’s right, because however you felt at the beginning of the relationship, one day you’ll wake up to this:

Fairground – Simply Red

Here’s the original video if you want to remind yourself – It hurts me to drive traffic to the advert youtube will play at you before the fun starts. Not because of the 30 seconds it will cost you in time, nor the banal life draining messages they’ll lever into your head via the fulcrum of Hucknell. What really bothers me is that, between you and I, we might do something that benefits him. Ah well, in for a penny, in for a pound.

It’s the voice on this last worthy candidate, thanks Peter, and the words it sings – I think you’ll like our proactive approach…

January – Pilot
