The Kirkwood Brown Trio popped in to our latest show and brought with them a much needed dose of cool.

James Kirk on acoustic double bass, plucking gut

James Kirk plays the acoustic double bass strung with real sheep gut. He once caused unnecessary distress gigging at a vegetarian restaurant.

Robin Brown on guitar

Robin Brown on Resonator guitar, louder by design...

When you meet the Kirkwood Brown Trio you realise that it is all about the sound, not only did they check out the loos for the acoustics, they also brought their own mic. And as you talk more with them you realise they choose their instruments with equal purpose. These resonator guitars were invented at a time when musicians would be found in noisy public houses. Noisy pubs… I think I remember those.

mark woodward plays mandolin

Mark Woodward on a properly old mandolin

This mandolin is some 300 years old and chosen because of its sound. In common with all the other instruments the band uses it has been added to the Kirkwood Brown arsenel by design. I dare say the band are the coolest thing to come out of Teighnmouth.

Oh, there is Muse, but these guys are different. Don’t listen to these guys if you want Muse, I just want to make that clear.

The band can be found here.

  1. Hi guys, great fun playing for you and I like your write up! Except one little correction- the mandolin as an instrument is 300 years old but the particular mandolin I was playing was a new Andy Manson creation! Cheers, marc
